Paul Trauttmansdorff gave a seminar lecture on 27 February 2025 about his book “The Digital Transformation of the European Border Regime. The Powers and Perils of Imagining Future Borders” (2024, Bristol University Press) at the RUNOMI Network of Radboud University.
This seminar discussed how large-scale databases for migration control shape and transmit visions of border security in Europe. Drawing on science and technology studies, Paul’s book analyses the ways in which imaginaries of digital transformation are intertwined with the production, enactment, and justification of future borders. To this end, the book delves into the work of the European Union agency eu-LISA – its sites, projects, visions, and operations in managing the IT systems in the Schengen Area. The seminar reflected on the agency’s role in the border regime and how its visions legitimize and normalize contemporary bordering with its consequences in Europe.
