Sebastian Pfotenhauer ist Carl-von-Linde-Professor für Innovationsforschung und ehemaliger Gründungsleiter des Departments Science, Technology and Society (STS) an der Technischen Universität München (TUM). Als STS- und Innovationsforscher zählt er zu den führenden Stimmen in Deutschland zu Fragen von Innovation, Gerechtigkeit und Gemeinwohl, zur Governance neuer Technologien sowie zu verantwortungsvollen und ko-kreativen Innovationspraktiken. Er ist zudem Experte für den Aufbau großer nationaler und internationaler Forschungskonsortien, die sozial- und ingenieurwissenschaftliche Expertise vereinen und innovative Beteiligungsformate für Technologiegestaltung mit Blick auf globale Herausforderungen entwickeln. Für solche Initiativen hat er bislang mehr als 100 Millionen Euro an Fördermitteln eingeworben.

Derzeit ist Sebastian Sprecher des DFG-Exzellenzclusters Munich Center for Transformative Technologies and Societal Change (TransforM), einer mit 60 Millionen Euro von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Initiative zur Stärkung sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung zu neuen Technologien. Außerdem ist er Sprecher des Munich Cluster for the Future of Mobility in Metropolitan Regions (MCube), Deutschlands führender Initiative für nachhaltige Mobilitätsinnovationen, die vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung mit einem Fördervolumen von 50 Millionen Euro unterstützt wird. Von 2018 bis 2022 koordinierte er das europäische Horizon2020-Projekt SCALINGS (Scaling up co-creation: Avenues and Limits for Integrating Society in Science and Innovation) – eine mit vier Millionen Euro geförderte Initiative zur Untersuchung neuer Formate gesellschaftlicher Beteiligung, etwa Living Labs und vorkommerzielle Beschaffung, in den Bereichen Robotik, autonomes Fahren und urbane Energiesysteme. Aktuell ist er akademischer Leiter des TUM-Masterstudiengangs Responsibility in Science, Engineering and Technology (RESET) sowie Vorsitzender des Beirats der Sektion Technik im Dialog des Vereins Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI).

Vor seinem Wechsel an die TUM war Sebastian Fellow im Harvard Program on Science, Technology and Society sowie Research Scientist und Lecturer im MIT Technology & Policy Program. Seine Arbeiten sind unter anderem in Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Science Robotics, Social Studies of Science, Research Policy, Science, Technology & Human Values, Science and Public Policy sowie Issues in Science and Technology erschienen. Darüber hinaus berät er regelmäßig regionale und nationale Regierungen sowie internationale Organisationen. Sebastian erhielt seinen S.M. in Technology Policy vom MIT und seine Promotion in Physik von der Universität Jena, gefolgt von Postdoc-Training in STS und Innovation Policy in Harvard University und am MIT. In seiner Freizeit ist Sebastian Mitgründer der queer-feministischen Buchhandlung glitch in München (Gewinnerin des Schwabinger Kunstpreises 2025 und des Deutschen Buchhandlungspreises 2025), besucht gerne Museumsausstellungen oder spielt Violine bei der Stüba Philharmonie.
