Blog Post: Kick-off of the MCube ReMIX Project on the Governance of Mobility Transformation
On December 19, 2024, the kick-off workshop for the ReMIX project – Regulatory, Organizational, and Political Dimensions of Mobility Innovations – took place at the Hochschule für Politik of the Technical University of Munich. Funded through the MCube Future Cluster Program, the project aims to support the design of mobility transformations in urban areas from an integrated social science perspective.
Mobility, Technology, and Social Change
The current mobility transition is closely intertwined with technological innovations such as digital data spaces, connected infrastructures, and autonomous systems. However, these technology-centric approaches only unfold their full potential through appropriate regulatory and organizational frameworks and societal negotiation processes. ReMIX examines how governance systems and experimental approaches – such as living labs – can contribute to embedding these innovations in regional contexts in a socially and ecologically robust way.
The project focuses on the following key questions:
- How can data-driven innovations, such as mobility data spaces, be designed effectively and responsibly?
- What forms of interdisciplinary collaboration are required to address technical and societal challenges together?
- How can we anticipate and address conflicts and ethical tensions?
The goal is to develop evidence-based recommendations that support and institutionalize the transformation of mobility at the municipal level in the long term.
Academic Exchange and Project Goals
The workshop began with an analysis of the results from the first phase of MCube funding. Expert presentations explored key topics such as data-driven governance models, sustainable mobility planning, and the role of experimental spaces. These inputs served as the foundation for a collective vision which the participants formulated on the basis of ideal project outcomes from the perspective of 2027.
Subsequent working sessions focused on defining key outputs and milestones. The integration of technological innovations into existing social and political structures took center stage. The project aims to bridge technological innovation with social responsibility – a critical challenge for the future of urban mobility.
