What institutional conditions foster or hinder mobility innovations in the Munich metropolitan region? This question was at the heart of a dialogue event held on May 27, 2025, organized by the Chair of Environmental and Climate Policy and acatech – the National Academy of Science and Engineering – as part of the ReMIX project.
The event aimed to explore key challenges related to governance, regulation and policy frameworks in implementing sustainable mobility solutions within the MCube Cluster. Expert insights from Peter Kasten (Oeko-Institut) and Prof. Miranda Schreurs (Chair of Climate and Environmental Policy, TUM) provided valuable perspectives on social justice and current developments in the mobility sector.
Together with representatives from various MCube projects, the following questions were discussed:
- What factors drive or hinder mobility innovations in the region?
- How can governance and planning processes support the mobility transition?
- What conditions are necessary to ensure that projects become sustainably anchored in the region over the long term?
These discussions also touched on more fundamental questions about the nature and purpose of mobility innovations: What kinds of innovations are we aiming for, why, and how should they be designed? A key consideration is how innovation processes can be more closely aligned with social needs and local realities.
As a project partner, the Research Group for Innovation Research focuses in particular on responsible innovation processes, for example in the context of living labs, data governance or socially inclusive design of new mobility solutions. A core understanding is that innovation should not be seen merely as a technical development, but rather as a societal negotiation process involving diverse actors, interests and values.
ReMIX is a social science integration project by the Technical University of Munich and acatech. At TUM, the Chair of Environmental and Climate Policy and the Chair of Innovation Research play central roles, while acatech contributes its expertise in policy advice. Together, ReMIX collaborates closely with municipal administrations, companies and civil society actors within the MCube cluster to develop integrated and reflexive approaches to future mobility.
