Mascha Gugganig a sociocultural anthropologist, scholar in science and technology studies (STS) and curator for exhibitions at the intersection of (agricultural) science, technology, society and the arts. Exploring these junctions allows for a better understanding of how technoscience is both embedded in, and shapes social and cultural worlds. For instance, why are genetically engineered crops or digital farming tools contested in some communities and political cultures, while they are accepted in others? What does knowledge production among Indigenous youth, biodiverse farmers or DYI farm-tool developers look like, and how do they challenge existing knowledge regimes, policies, or industry’ tech developments? Another focus of her work concerns arts-based approaches, both as complementary approaches to, and critiques of conventional scientific research and public engagement methods. Related to this work, she is co-director of the Center for Life Science and Society with Prof. Dr. Annika Guse at the LMU Faculty of Biology.
I am currently looking for Master students interested in researching correlations and contestations of digital technologies, robotics & AI, and agroecology/agroforestry, as well as grassroots innovation in agroecological tool development. This may include survey development and analysis, qualitative/ethnographic research, Living Lab development, and lit review among others. German proficiency is preferred but not essential.
